Description

Plate Caster Model 9 Rigid Caster is the matching plate caster for the Model 9 Swivel Caster.  When manually moving equipment supported by 4 swivel casters it can be difficult to control the direction you are pushing or pulling.  Rigid casters assist in controlling equipment being moved in straight line travel.  Equipment with rigid casters installed can not move sideways.  Rigid Casters are usually installed at the opposite end of the push handle.  Leg thickness is 1/4”.  The axle diameter is 1/2” long and is designed to use wheels with a hub width of 2 7/16”.  This caster is constructed from stamped steel.

Rigid Casters can carry more weight than swivel casters because they do not have an offset.  Nevertheless, on our website both rigid casters and matching swivel casters are shown with the same capacity.  Other mounting plate sizes and wheel bearing types are available on request.

This caster is available in Stainless Steel Model 9.  It is constructed from 304 SS.  This is an excellent caster for wet or corrosive applications if your total weight exceeds 1000lbs.  It comes with the same large selection of wheels, some of which are also NSF and ROHS compliant.

Polyurethane is superior to rubber in resistance to grease, oil, cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear. These caster wheels can be used on almost any factory floor. As with moldon rubber, the bonding agent which holds the polyurethane tire ( tread ) to its iron center can be affected by exposure to some chemicals, impact, overloading, and the buildup of heat. Tire Hardness is Durometer : 95A.   Temperature range is -20° to 180° F.

The principle benefit of a polyurethane wheel over the same size rubber wheel is increased capacity. Given the same size load on a smooth floor, a polyurethane caster wheel rolls easier than the same size conventional rubber caster wheel. However, when used at full capacity, polyurethane is not easy rolling. Given a manual operation under ideal conditions, polyurethane caster wheels have a safe operating capacity of up to three times the capacity of the same size rubber wheel. Capacity ratings are offered as an idea of what the wheel will carry without failure. They are not absolute, but rather depend on the usage and service.

*This Plate Caster Model 9 contains 3 1/4″ Green Polyurethane on Iron Wheel.

Polyurethane Caster Wheels – Superior Performance Casters

Polyurethane Caster Wheels from Caster City offer superior performance compared to rubber wheels, excelling in resistance to grease, oil, cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear. Available in green (PY) or red (PYR) polyurethane tread bonded to a durable iron core, these wheels are designed for versatility and can be used on nearly any factory floor. With a tire hardness of 90–95 Durometer (Shore A), they provide excellent durability while maintaining a temperature range of -20°F to 180°F. The bonding agent securing the polyurethane tread to the iron center may be affected by certain chemicals, high impact, overloading, or heat buildup, so proper application is key. Available in widths of 1.25”, 1.5”, 2”, and 3” and diameters up to 16”, these wheels support a variety of bearing types, including precision sealed ball bearings, roller bearings, or stainless steel bearings, ensuring smooth operation across diverse industrial settings.

The primary advantage of polyurethane wheels over rubber is their significantly higher load capacity – up to three times that of a comparable rubber wheel under ideal conditions on smooth floors. This makes them an excellent choice for heavy-duty applications in industries such as material handling, manufacturing, warehousing, and automotive, where they can be used on platform trucks, assembly line carts, or heavy equipment movers. While polyurethane wheels roll more easily than rubber at the same load, they may become less easy-rolling when pushed to their maximum capacity. Capacity ratings serve as a guideline for safe operation, but actual performance depends on usage, service conditions, and environmental factors. To ensure optimal performance, consult Caster City’s engineering team at 800-501-3808 for guidance on high-impact or high-temperature applications.

FAQ

“PY” Standard Duty Polyurethane on Iron Wheel

What is the Polyurethane on Iron wheel made of?
Polyurethane tire (90-95 Durometer, Shore A) on an iron core.

What’s the load capacity of the Polyurethane on Iron wheel?
Varies by size—check ratings and pick higher than your load.

What are the benefits of the standard duty Polyurethane on Iron wheel?
Inexpensive initial cost, Resists grease, oil, cutting, and wear. Rolls easier than rubber on smooth floors.

What are the downsides?
Not for shock, overloading, rough floors, or storage loads. Tough to roll at full capacity.

Where does it work best?
Warehouses, manufacturing, food processing, retail, and institutional settings.

Can it handle wet areas?
Yes, but avoid chemicals that harm the bonding agent.

How’s it on floors?
Better than metal, not as soft as rubber—some deflection under load.

What’s the temperature range?
-20° to 180° F.
