Description

Plate Swivel Model 9s are our most popular industrial caster because of its cheap initial cost and vast selection of wheels.  Under the mounting plate it has 2 rows of balls rotating on heat treated raceways.  The swivel has a bolt and nut center pin welded to withstand normal damage in a manually moved application.  The center bolt diameter is 5/8” and the leg thickness is 1/4”, welded on the inside and out.  The axle diameter is 1/2” long and is designed to use wheels with a hub width of 2 7/16”.  This caster is built from stamped steel.  The metal frames are zinc plated for rust resistance, and it has lubrication fittings for all moveable parts.  Model 9 has a wide selection of wheel brakes and swivel locks for most applications.  Other mounting plate sizes and wheel bearing types are available on request.

DO NOT ORDER SWIVEL LOCK OR RACEWAY SEALS IF YOU ORDER THE TL – TOTAL LOCK BRAKE. THE TL BRAKE WILL NOT WORK WITH EITHER THE SWIVEL LOCK OR RACEWAY SEALS.

Gray Iron industrial caster wheels from Caster City are a cost-effective and reliable choice for light-duty applications, offering a low initial cost and maintenance ease. These wheels, equipped with a lubrication fitting in the hub, won’t go flat and are perfect for stationary loads or infrequent movement, like light-duty warehouse carts, stationary machinery, or display stands. Available in 2” and 3” widths with diameters from 3” to 12”, they feature roller bearings or sealed ball bearings and can handle temperatures up to 400°F. Their chemical resistance and inability to develop flat spots make them ideal for stable, low-impact setups where budget matters.

However, Gray Iron wheels aren’t suited for heavy-duty or abusive conditions due to their limited capacity and impact strength compared to Ductile Steel or Forged Steel wheels. They can damage factory floors under heavy loads, so they’re best used on steel plates, in channels, or as V-groove wheels on inverted angle iron tracks. For heavy-duty carts or applications needing floor protection, consider switching to Ductile Steel, Forged Steel, or polyurethane wheels. Gray Iron wheels shine in controlled environments but fall short where high durability or frequent movement is required.

This caster is available in Stainless Steel – click here.  This is an excellent caster for wet or corrosive applications if your total weight exceeds 1000lbs.  It comes with the same large selection of wheels, some of which are also NSF and ROHS compliant.

Gray Iron Caster Wheels from Caster City

The Gray Iron Industrial Caster Wheels we engineer at Caster City are a low-cost solution primarily chosen for their affordability, offering a budget-friendly option for applications where cost is a priority and floor protection is not a concern. Available in 2” and 3” widths with diameters ranging from 3” to 12”, these wheels are equipped with a lubrication fitting in the hub for easy maintenance and come with either roller bearings or sealed precision ball bearings for reliable performance. Designed to support heavy loads without developing flat spots, Gray Iron wheels are a practical choice for static or low-mobility applications in industrial settings, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 400°F depending on the application.

While Gray Iron Caster Wheels provide an economical alternative, they are not recommended for severe or abusive applications due to their lower strength compared to steel wheels. For only a modest increase in cost, we recommend our steel wheels, which offer nearly twice the strength and durability. Gray Iron wheels will damage most factory floors under heavy loads, so they are typically used on steel plating, in metal channels, or as V-grooved wheels rolling on inverted angle iron tracks to protect costly flooring. These wheels are best suited for environments where budget constraints outweigh the need for enhanced performance or floor preservation.

Ideal for cost-conscious applications requiring reliable load support, Gray Iron Industrial Caster Wheels deliver functionality at a low initial cost. However, for superior strength and longevity, we encourage customers to consider our steel wheel options. Contact Caster City to discuss your needs or for custom configurations of our Gray Iron Caster Wheels, ensuring you get the most cost-effective solution for your industrial requirements.

FAQ

Model 9 Plate Caster (Zinc) with CL Gray Iron Wheel FAQ

Max Capacity: 1000 lbs, Roller Bearing Only

What are Model 9 plate casters with CL Gray Iron wheels used for?

These industrial casters are perfect for light-duty tasks like moving small warehouse carts or supporting stationary equipment. The zinc-plated Model 9 plate caster with CL Gray Iron wheels handles up to 1000 lbs per caster on smooth floors or steel tracks, great for occasional movement.

How much weight can a Model 9 swivel plate caster with CL Gray Iron wheels hold?

Each heavy duty industrial caster supports up to 1000 lbs when moved manually. For heavier loads, switch to stronger casters and wheels like Ductile Steel to avoid overloading.

Are Model 9 casters and wheels good for warehouse carts?

Yes, the Model 9 swivel plate caster with CL Gray Iron wheels works well for light-duty warehouse carts under 1000 lbs on smooth concrete. They’re budget-friendly, won’t go flat, and roll smoothly, but avoid bumpy or rough floors.

Can Model 9 heavy duty casters with CL Gray Iron wheels run on tracks?

Definitely! The CL Gray Iron wheels come in V-groove options for inverted angle iron tracks or steel plates. These plate casters with roller bearings ensure smooth, guided movement for loads up to 1000 lbs.

Will Model 9 industrial casters damage my factory floor?

CL Gray Iron wheels can scratch floors under heavy loads unless used on steel plates, channels, or tracks. For floor protection, consider polyurethane heavy duty casters instead.

Why do Model 9 plate casters use roller bearings with CL Gray Iron wheels?

Roller bearings in these swivel plate casters provide smooth rolling for manual movement, especially with V-groove wheels. They’re reliable and cost-effective for loads up to 1000 lbs.

What temperatures can Model 9 heavy duty industrial casters handle?

The CL Gray Iron wheels on these casters and wheels can take up to 400°F, depending on the application. Contact Caster City for high-heat setups to confirm suitability.

How do I maintain Model 9 casters and wheels with CL Gray Iron wheels?

Grease the roller bearings through the hub’s lubrication fitting regularly. This keeps your industrial casters rolling smoothly and extends their lifespan.

Can I use Model 9 plate casters for heavy machinery?

They’re ideal for stationary machinery under 1000 lbs, preventing flat spots. For heavy or frequently moved equipment, opt for tougher heavy duty casters like Forged Steel.

Do Model 9 swivel plate casters with CL Gray Iron wheels have brakes?

Yes, you can add wheel brakes or total lock brakes, but they’re not designed for inclines. Check with Caster City to ensure brake compatibility with your plate caster.

How do I install Model 9 heavy duty industrial casters?

Secure the 4” x 4-1/2” zinc-plated mounting plate with at least 4 bolts. Ensure swivel plate casters are parallel to the floor and rigid casters align properly. Avoid improper welding, as it can damage the bearings.

When should I avoid using Model 9 casters with CL Gray Iron wheels?

Skip these casters for loads over 1000 lbs, rough floors, or powered equipment. They’re not built for abuse, so choose Ductile Steel or polyurethane heavy duty casters for tougher jobs.
