Chair Casters for Carpet

The most important thing is to make sure that the stem of the caster will FIT your chair. Click Here for help on measuring your stem correctly.

If you are in a chair many hours each day and your weight exceeds 200 lbs, we suggest you consider using casters with at least 3″ diameter wheels. Capacity is only one factor in determining the proper caster.

Chair Caster Selection

We do not recommend using any wheel on loose or high-pile carpet, as it can hinder movement and cause premature wear to both the carpet and the caster. Chair casters with hard polyurethane wheels typically roll best and last longer on low-pile or commercial-grade carpet. For carpet over soft padding, be aware that the surface may compress under weight, affecting caster performance. We advise consulting with your carpet manufacturer for specific recommendations before using casters on their product. Our warranty covers only the construction and quality of our chair casters.

When looking for carpet casters, one of the important things to consider is how thick or long your carpet is. Most offices will have short carpets made of thin squares, while many homes will have thicker and longer carpets with an underlay that your furniture casters will need to roll across.

Caster Width

Different casters work better on different carpet thicknesses, but one important rule of thumb is to keep your carpet caster wheels on the thin side, as thicker casters have more difficulty as the carpet gets longer.

The alternative view is that the heavier the furniture, the thicker or wider your carpet casters can be to handle the extra load capacity.

You’ll need to decide whether load capacity or maneuverability matters more for your setup, especially on longer carpet.

Caster Diameter

A larger diameter makes rolling much easier, since bigger carpet casters cover more ground with less force. This matters most for heavier furniture, or office chairs that get moved often between desks or areas.

The tradeoff is that large diameter casters raise the center of gravity, which can make furniture more prone to toppling. If you have specific height requirements, such as clearance under a desk, table, or in an alcove, large diameter casters may not be suitable.

Choosing the Right Caster Wheel Material for Your Carpet

Material Best For Load Capacity Key Notes
Polyurethane General carpet use, heavy furniture & office chairs High Won’t streak carpet, extremely quiet, protects carpet from wear
Hard Nylon Short office carpets, office chairs Medium-High Affordable and won’t damage short carpet; may need a larger diameter as carpet gets longer
Double/Twin Budget-conscious, general mobility Up to ~250 lbs Cheaper option, but hair and debris can get trapped, limiting movement until cleaned
Nylon Twin Wheel Light-duty, office chairs used for short periods Low Lowest upfront cost, but wears out sooner than other options
Rubber Rarely recommended for carpet Varies Can dig into and rip carpet; may work on ultra-thin carpet with infrequent movement
Metal Long or thick carpeting other materials get stuck on High Can damage typical office carpet, avoid unless carpet is unusually long or thick
Soft Nylon Light use on carpet, primarily built for hard floors Low Can break or chip, snagging and damaging carpet; heavy-duty casters are better for bigger loads

You should never select on the basis of load capacity alone. There is no industry standard for load capacity ratings and they may not include a factor for abuse. Our capacity ratings are below what the casters are capable of carrying because most applications have less than perfect conditions. Please refer to the information shown at the bottom of this page. If you have any doubt as to which wheel or caster is the BEST choice for your application contact us for a recommendation.
