A spring-loaded (shock-absorbing) caster has a built-in spring mechanism in the stem or leg that compresses under impact, smoothing out the ride and protecting both the equipment and its cargo from jolts.
The spring sits inline with the stem or mounting leg and compresses when the caster hits a bump, threshold, or dock plate gap, then returns to its resting length. Spec sheets list the spring’s travel distance and spring constant (stiffness) — both matter for how much shock actually gets absorbed under a given load.
Carts carrying fragile or sensitive cargo, equipment that regularly crosses thresholds, gaps, or dock plates, and any application where shock transmission to the load is a real problem.
Mismatched spring rate. A spring too soft for a heavy load bottoms out and stops absorbing shock; one too stiff for a light load barely compresses at all. Match the spring constant to the actual load, not just the caster’s maximum rating.
