Polyurethane Wheel

A polyurethane wheel uses a polyurethane tread — often bonded over an iron, aluminum, or nylon core — offering higher load capacity and stronger resistance to cuts, oil, and most chemicals than a comparable rubber wheel.

What a polyurethane wheel is

In the catalog, polyurethane wheels span roughly 200 to 10,000 lbs capacity, a much wider range than mold-on rubber, making them a common middle ground between hard wheels (durable but noisy and harder on floors) and soft rubber (quiet but lower capacity).

Not all polyurethane wheels are equal: durometer (hardness) and core material both change the ride and capacity, so two polyurethane wheels can behave very differently.

When it matters

Warehouse and industrial floors where load capacity and durability matter more than dead-quiet operation, and any application needing resistance to oil, grease, or common chemicals.

What to check / common mistakes

Treating all polyurethane wheels as interchangeable. Durometer changes both floor protection and rolling resistance — a harder wheel rolls easier but transmits more impact to the floor and load.

Ignoring core material. Iron, aluminum, and nylon cores differ in weight and cost even under an identical tread.

Frequently asked questions

Is polyurethane better than rubber?

Not universally — polyurethane generally handles higher loads and resists chemicals and cuts better, while rubber is often quieter and gentler on some floor finishes. It depends on the application.

What does durometer mean for a polyurethane wheel?

It's the hardness rating. Higher durometer means higher capacity and easier rolling, but less cushioning and slightly more floor impact.

Will polyurethane wheels mark my floor?

Non-marking polyurethane formulations are available and common — check the specific product listing for a non-marking designation.
