An expanding adapter stem (expanding rubber stem) uses a rubber sleeve that compresses and expands to grip the inside of a tube leg as the stem's center bolt is tightened, creating a snug, adjustable fit.
Because the fit is adjustable via the tightening bolt, expanding stems tolerate a small range of tube inside-diameters better than a fixed-size grip ring stem.
Furniture and equipment with tubular legs where diameter isn’t perfectly standard, or where a more adjustable/removable fit is preferred over a permanent-feeling grip ring.
Under-tightening the center bolt. An expanding stem that isn’t fully tightened can work loose over time — check it periodically, especially early after installation.

How is this different from a grip ring stem?
Expanding stems adjust via a tightening bolt and tolerate a small range of tube sizes; grip ring stems are a fixed-size push-fit.
Do expanding stems loosen over time?
They can if not fully tightened initially — a periodic check and retighten is good practice in heavy-use settings.
