Mounting Types

Stem Mount Caster

A stem mount caster attaches via a rigid post — the stem — that inserts into a hole, socket, or tube in the equipment's leg, rather than bolting to a flat plate. Common on furniture and equipment with tubular or drilled legs.

What a stem mount caster is

Several stem styles exist — threaded, grip ring, expanding rubber, and square/round — each suited to a different leg construction. Matching the stem type and diameter to the existing socket matters far more than matching “caster size” generally.

When it matters

Replacing an existing stem caster, or equipping furniture and light equipment with tubular or pre-drilled legs where a flat plate doesn’t apply.

What to check / common mistakes

Ordering by stem name alone. Different stem styles are not interchangeable with each other — always measure stem diameter and length against the existing socket, and confirm which style (threaded, grip ring, expanding, square/round) the equipment actually uses.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know which stem type I need?

Look at how the current caster's stem is held in: threaded (screws in), grip ring (push-fit with a retaining ring), expanding rubber (tightens via an internal wedge), or square/round (friction-fit into a matching socket).

Can I convert a stem caster to plate mount?

Not directly — they're different attachment systems. You'd need equipment with a corresponding flat mounting surface.

Do stem casters carry as much weight as plate casters?

Often somewhat less, since the stem is a single, smaller mounting point rather than a multi-bolt plate — check the individual capacity rating.
