Axle

The axle is the pin or rod that runs through the wheel hub and yoke, letting the wheel rotate. Axle diameter has to match the wheel's hub bore, and axle material/hardware (lock nut, etc.) affects how securely the wheel stays in place.

What a axle is

Most caster axles are held with a lock nut or retaining clip; over time these can loosen under vibration, which is a common source of wheel wobble that isn’t actually a bearing problem.

When it matters

Diagnosing wheel wobble or play, and when replacing a wheel — axle diameter must match the new wheel’s hub bore.

What to check / common mistakes

Assuming wheel wobble is always a bearing issue. Check the axle nut/retention hardware first — a loose axle is a simpler, cheaper fix than a bearing replacement.

Frequently asked questions

What causes a wheel to wobble on its axle?

Often a loose axle nut or worn retaining hardware, not necessarily a bad bearing — check and tighten the axle assembly first.

How do I know what axle diameter I need?

Match it to the hub bore of the wheel you're installing — it's listed on the product spec sheet.
