Top-Lock Brake

A top-lock brake is operated from a lever or pedal positioned at the top of the caster near the mounting plate, rather than down near the wheel — designed for easier access without bending down or reaching under equipment.

What a top-lock brake is

The mechanism itself still locks the wheel (and sometimes swivel), but the operating point is positioned for convenience, which matters on tall equipment or carts where reaching a low-mounted brake is awkward.

When it matters

Tall carts and equipment where a low, wheel-level brake lever would be hard to reach or operate comfortably.

What to check / common mistakes

Not checking operator accessibility before choosing a brake style. If staff will be engaging the brake frequently, lever position and ease of reach matters as much as the locking mechanism itself.

Frequently asked questions

Is a top-lock brake different from a face-contact brake?

Top-lock describes where the operating lever is positioned (near the top); face-contact describes how the brake engages the wheel. A caster can combine both.

Does top-lock lock the swivel too?

Depends on the specific model — some top-lock casters lock swivel and wheel together, others just the wheel. Check the product listing.
