Face-Contact Brake

A face-contact brake presses a pad directly against the flat face (side) of the wheel to stop rotation, rather than against the tread — a common, simple braking style on plate and stem casters alike.

What a face-contact brake is

Because it engages the wheel’s side rather than its rolling surface, face-contact brakes don’t wear down the tread the way some other brake styles can over heavy repeated use.

When it matters

General-purpose braked casters where simple, reliable engagement matters more than a specific specialty locking feature.

What to check / common mistakes

Assuming all brake styles perform identically. Face-contact, top-lock, and pedal brakes all stop the wheel but engage differently — check which style fits your equipment’s access and operating pattern.

Frequently asked questions

Does a face-contact brake wear out the wheel tread?

Less than tread-contact brake styles, since it presses against the wheel's side face rather than the rolling surface.

Is face-contact brake foot-operated?

It can be paired with a pedal or hand-operated lever depending on the specific caster model — check the product listing.
