Leading/Trailing Caster

"Leading" and "trailing" describe a rigid caster's position relative to the direction of travel — a trailing caster sits behind its mounting point in the direction of push, which is the standard, stable orientation for most equipment.

What a leading/trailing caster is

Most rigid casters are designed to trail, similar to a shopping cart’s front wheels self-aligning behind the direction of push — a leading orientation is less common and generally less stable.

When it matters

Understanding why equipment tracks the way it does, and diagnosing steering or stability issues related to caster orientation.

What to check / common mistakes

Mounting rigid casters backward from their intended orientation. Trailing orientation is standard for stability — check the manufacturer’s intended mounting direction rather than guessing.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between leading and trailing?

Trailing means the caster sits behind its mounting point in the direction of travel (the stable, standard orientation); leading is the reverse and generally less stable.

Does this apply to swivel casters too?

Leading/trailing is primarily a rigid-caster concept — swivel casters self-align regardless of direction, which is part of their purpose.
