Rigid Caster

A rigid caster rolls only in a fixed, straight-line direction — it doesn't swivel. Used alone, it keeps equipment tracking straight; paired with swivel casters on the same cart, it holds direction while the swivel casters handle turning.

What a rigid caster is

A rigid caster has no swivel section at all — the wheel fork mounts directly to the plate or stem in one fixed orientation. Fewer moving parts means a simpler, often slightly more durable connection for straight-line heavy loads.

Rigid casters are almost always used in combination with swivel casters on the same equipment rather than on their own, since an all-rigid setup is very difficult to turn by hand.

When it matters

Long equipment — tables, racks, conveyor stands — that needs to track straight without wandering, and any setup pairing with swivel casters for controlled steering.

What to check / common mistakes

Using all rigid casters. Turning becomes very difficult without at least one swivel pair.

Mismatched wheel diameters. If the rigid and swivel casters on the same piece of equipment don’t share the same wheel diameter, the equipment tilts and puts uneven stress on one pair.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use all rigid casters on a cart?

Technically yes, but the cart becomes hard to turn or steer. Most equipment mixes rigid and swivel casters instead.

Do rigid and swivel casters need to match?

Yes — match wheel diameter between the rigid and swivel casters on the same equipment, or it will sit unevenly and stress one pair more than the other.

Are rigid casters cheaper than swivel?

Often slightly, since there's no swivel mechanism, but the choice should be driven by the application, not price alone.
