Kingpin Caster

A kingpin caster is the traditional swivel-caster design, where a single threaded bolt — the kingpin — runs through the center of the swivel section and acts as the pivot point holding the fork and top plate or stem together.

What a kingpin caster is

This is the standard, most common swivel construction and the default across most of the catalog unless a listing specifically calls out kingpinless. It’s a proven, lower-cost design that holds up fine for typical duty cycles.

The contrast is kingpinless construction, which replaces that single bolt with a full ball-bearing raceway, spreading load around the whole swivel joint instead of concentrating it on one pin — better for high-shock, high-cycle use, at a higher price.

When it matters

General-purpose, light-to-medium duty, and cost-sensitive applications where extreme shock loading or duty cycle isn’t the deciding factor.

What to check / common mistakes

Assuming kingpin means low capacity. Load rating is set by the wheel, bearing, and plate or stem construction, not by the swivel type alone — kingpin casters are available in heavy-duty ratings too.

Not knowing kingpinless is an option. If a caster keeps working loose under heavy shock or high cycles, a kingpinless upgrade addresses that specific failure mode.

Frequently asked questions

Is a kingpin caster the same as a regular caster?

Yes — it's the standard, traditional swivel construction unless a product specifically says "kingpinless."

When should I upgrade to kingpinless?

For high-cycle, shock-heavy, or dock and tow-line applications where a caster loosening over time would cause costly downtime.

Does kingpin construction mean lower quality?

No — it means standard construction. Quality still varies by wheel, bearing, and plate or stem build, same as any caster.
