Tapered Roller Bearing

A tapered roller bearing wheel uses angled (tapered) rollers that handle both straight-down (radial) load and side-to-side (thrust) load — useful where a caster takes combined stress, not just straight vertical weight.

What a tapered roller bearing is

The taper lets the bearing resist side loading better than a standard roller bearing, which matters in swivel casters that see cornering forces in addition to straight weight.

When it matters

Heavy-duty swivel casters that regularly corner under load, or any application combining high capacity with frequent turning.

What to check / common mistakes

Choosing based on capacity number alone. Tapered roller bearings are about load type as much as load amount — a straight-line rigid caster often doesn’t need the thrust-load capability a tapered roller bearing provides.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need tapered roller bearings for a rigid caster?

Usually not — the thrust-load handling matters most for swivel casters that see side loading while turning.

Are tapered roller bearings more expensive?

Generally yes, reflecting the more complex bearing geometry, but they're worth it for heavy, frequently-cornering equipment.
