Description

Plate Caster Model 9 Rigid Caster is the matching plate caster for the Model 9 Swivel Caster.  When manually moving equipment supported by 4 swivel casters it can be difficult to control the direction you are pushing or pulling.  Rigid casters assist in controlling equipment being moved in straight line travel.  Equipment with rigid casters installed can not move sideways.  Rigid Casters are usually installed at the opposite end of the push handle.  Leg thickness is 1/4”.  The axle diameter is 1/2” long and is designed to use wheels with a hub width of 2 7/16”.  This caster is constructed from stamped steel.

Rigid Casters can carry more weight than swivel casters because they do not have an offset.  Nevertheless, on our website both rigid casters and matching swivel casters are shown with the same capacity.  Other mounting plate sizes and wheel bearing types are available on request.

This caster is available in Stainless Steel Model 9.  It is constructed from 304 SS.  This is an excellent caster for wet or corrosive applications if your total weight exceeds 1000lbs.  It comes with the same large selection of wheels, some of which are also NSF and ROHS compliant.Polyurethane is superior to rubber in resistance to grease, oil, cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear. These caster wheels can be used on almost any factory floor. As with moldon rubber, the bonding agent which holds the polyurethane tire ( tread ) to its iron center can be affected by exposure to some chemicals, impact, overloading, and the buildup of heat. Tire Hardness is Durometer : 95A.   Temperature range is -20° to 180° F.

The principle benefit of a polyurethane wheel over the same size rubber wheel is increased capacity. Given the same size load on a smooth floor, a polyurethane caster wheel rolls easier than the same size conventional rubber caster wheel. However, when used at full capacity, polyurethane is not easy rolling. Given a manual operation under ideal conditions, polyurethane caster wheels have a safe operating capacity of up to three times the capacity of the same size rubber wheel. Capacity ratings are offered as an idea of what the wheel will carry without failure. They are not absolute, but rather depend on the usage and service.

*This Plate Caster Model 9 contains the Red Polyurethane on Iron with Roller Bearing in the Wheel.

FAQ

What is the Plate Caster Model 9 with the “PYR” Polyurethane on Iron – Red Wheel?

The Plate Caster Model 9 is a popular industrial caster featuring a red polyurethane on iron wheel (“PYR”). It’s designed for durability, with a swivel or rigid configuration, a 1250 lbs capacity per caster, and a stamped steel frame with zinc plating for rust resistance. The polyurethane wheel resists grease, oil, cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear, making it ideal for various industrial applications.

What are the key features of the Plate Caster Model 9 swivel caster?

The swivel caster has a 5/8” kingpin bolt, 1/4” leg thickness, and a 1/2” axle diameter for wheels with a 2 7/16” hub width. It features two rows of balls on heat-treated raceways, a welded nut and bolt center pin, and lubrication fittings for all movable parts. It’s constructed from stamped steel with zinc plating and offers a variety of wheel brakes and swivel locks.

What are the benefits of the “PYR” polyurethane wheel compared to rubber wheels?

The “PYR” polyurethane wheel offers superior resistance to grease, oil, cutting, chunking, and abrasive wear compared to rubber. It has a higher capacity (up to three times that of a same-sized rubber wheel under ideal conditions), rolls easier on smooth floors, and is more durable, though it’s harder to push when fully loaded. Its hardness is 90-95 Durometer (Shore A), with a temperature range of -20° to 180° F.

What is the difference between the swivel and rigid versions of the Plate Caster Model 9?

Swivel casters allow 360-degree movement, ideal for maneuverability, while rigid casters are fixed for straight-line travel, improving control when pushing or pulling. Rigid casters can carry more weight due to no offset, but both are rated at 1250 lbs for consistency. Rigid casters are typically installed opposite the push handle for better directional control.

Can the Plate Caster Model 9 with “PYR” wheel be used in wet or corrosive environments?

Yes, the Stainless Steel Model 9, made from 304 stainless steel, is excellent for wet or corrosive applications, especially for loads over 1000 lbs. It offers the same wheel options, including NSF and ROHS-compliant wheels, making it suitable for food, beverage, or chemical settings.

What are the ideal applications for the Plate Caster Model 9 with “PYR” wheel?

This caster is suited for manufacturing, warehousing, automotive, aerospace, food and beverage, logistics, entertainment, construction, and mining. Specific uses include moving heavy parts in automotive assembly, hauling machinery in metalworking shops, supporting carts in industrial laundry, or transporting tools in aerospace assembly.

Is the “PYR” polyurethane wheel floor-protective?

The “PYR” wheel is not truly floor-protective like soft rubber due to its hardness and lack of cushioning. However, it’s less harsh on floors than metal wheels because of some deflection under load. It’s best used on smooth, controlled surfaces to minimize floor damage.

What are the limitations of the “PYR” polyurethane wheel?

The wheel’s bonding agent can weaken with exposure to certain chemicals, impact, overloading, or heat buildup. It’s not ideal for rough floors, shock loads, or static storage, as it lacks resilience. It’s also harder to roll when fully loaded and not suited for food, retail, or institutional settings.

Can I use the Total Lock (TL) Brake with swivel lock or raceway seals on the Plate Caster Model 9?

No, the Total Lock (TL) Brake is incompatible with swivel locks or raceway seals. Do not order these components together, as they will prevent the TL Brake from functioning properly.

What wheel bearing types and mounting plate sizes are available for the Plate Caster Model 9?

The “PYR” wheel comes with a roller bearing, but other bearing types and mounting plate sizes are available upon request. Contact the supplier at 800-501-3808 for customization options.

How does the capacity rating work for the “PYR” wheel?

The 1250 lbs capacity per caster is a guide for what the wheel can carry without failure under ideal conditions. Actual capacity depends on usage, floor conditions, and service. For safety, select a wheel with higher capacity than needed, as polyurethane wheels are harder to roll at full capacity.

What industries benefit most from the “PYR” Polyurethane on Iron – Red Wheel?

The “PYR” wheel excels in automotive manufacturing, metalworking, heavy equipment repair, industrial laundry, chemical plants, distribution centers, aerospace assembly, plastics manufacturing, printing presses, and logistics hubs due to its durability, load capacity, and resistance to grease, oil, and chemicals.

Where can I get more information or place an order for the Plate Caster Model 9 with “PYR” wheel?

For additional details or to place an order, call 800-501-3808 or visit CasterCity.com, where the 6” caster wheel is displayed.

Is the “PYR” wheel suitable for food or retail environments?

No, the “PYR” wheel is designed for industrial settings like warehouses and manufacturing, not for food, retail, or institutional environments. For food-safe applications, consider NSF-compliant wheels available with the Stainless Steel Model 9.
